Just in: The Sony 70-400 f/4-f/5.6 SSM “G” lens

Not really a wedding photographer’s lens, this one! I’m taking it on vacation and wanted something really big and heavy to defend myself with if I’m attacked by a grizzly. This will do the trick. Weighs about 3.5 lbs. And with the hood on, it seems like it’s about three feet long. (In fact, bit more than 12″ end to end.) Big change for me.

Tamron 70-300 on left, Sony 70-400 “G” on right. The Tamron is not exactly dwarfed by the Sony, but if they got into a fight, I’d bet on the Sony, which weighs about 4 times more than the Tamron. Lots of plastic in the Tamron, lots of metal in the Sony.

Makes me think of the famous scene in Crocodile Dundee where Paul Hogan calmly disses a would-be mugger, by saying, “That’s not a knife. That’s a knife.”
