Received: Timothy Egan’s book on Edward Curtis

This is exciting. Received today from Amazon, the cryptically-titled Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis, by Timothy Egan. (Click here or on cover image below to view book at

Curtis is one of my handful of favorite all-time photographers, along with August Sander, Andre Kertesz, Jacques-Henri Lartigue and of course Cartier-Bresson. A couple of years ago we saw an absolutely splendid, breathtaking exhibit of Curtis’s photogravures at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth. Words fail me. Just about everything about Curtis’s work is impressive.

Really looking forward to reading the book. Just wish I had a better book of Curtis’s photos. I have a couple small anthologies but with Curtis, as with August Sander, it’s not just the artistry of the individual photos that grabs you but equally the grand scope of the project.
